The sins of the wicked are a trap. They get caught in the net of their own sin.  (Proverbs 5:22) (GNT)

Jesus replied, “I assure you that everyone who sins is a slave of sin. A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever.  So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free.”        (John 8:34-36) (NLT)

I will sing of my Redeemer, And His wondrous love for me…On the cruel cross He suffered, From the curse to set me free.

Sing, O sing, of my Redeemer, With His blood He purchased me, On the cross He sealed my pardon, Paid the debt and made me free!

Q: What does is mean to “redeem” something?

Digging Deeper

Q1: Have you ever been in a situation where you felt trapped or unable to escape? How did you feel?  How about when you were set free?  

Q2: Study Exodus 23:31-33.  God’s people were warned not to be ensnared by the culture around them?  What societal “snares” are Christians sometimes getting caught in today?

Q3: Read Ephesians 2:1-9.  What do these verse teach you about both bondage and freedom?

Q4: Is there one specific area of your walk with Jesus where you have transitioned from bondage to freedom?  If so, describe.

Q5: Study Colossians 1:13-14.  What are some of the attributes of the dominion of darkness?  How about the kingdom of light?  Which one stands out as most important to you? Why?

Q6: In what sense did God “buy us back”?
