1) Who Is Matthew?  (Matthew 9:9-13)

  • Calling of Matthew by Jesus – Mark 2:13-17/Luke 5:27-32

Acts 1:13

  • Grouped with other Disciples – Matthew 14:13-21, Luke 24:36-52

 “…While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you…” – Matthew 26:17-20 

2) Two Words That Will Change Your Life: “_____________ _______” (Matthew 9:9)

“After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him, and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.” – Luke 5:27-28 

  • Matthew’s call was NOT POPULAR (Romans 15:7)
  • Matthew’s call was RISKY 
    • Call of Peter & Andrew, and James & John (Matthew 4:18-22)
  • Matthew’s response was IMMEDIATE 

3) What Do We Learn From Matthew’s Call?

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30

Q3: Read Romans 8:28.  How does the account of Matthew’s call to follow Jesus remind you of your own call to follow Him?

Q5: How might Jesus’ call to Matthew give us hope for unbelievers we know who seem unreachable with the gospel?

Q6: Read Matthew 9:13.  What does Jesus mean when he says, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice?”  How have you been showing this to others lately?

Q7: Read 1 Timothy 1:15-16 & 1 Peter 5:10.  In what ways have you seen the fullness of Jesus’ forgiveness and restoration in your life lately?
