1) Jesus will be _____________ (13:31-33)

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” – Philippians 2:9-11

2) A new command: ________ _______ ___________ (13:34-35)

We love each other because he loved us first. “If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a fellow believer, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see? And he has given us this command: Those who love God must also love their fellow believers.” – 1 John 4:19-21 (1 Thessalonians 4:9)

3) Failure is not ____________ (13:36-38)

“Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away. Then times of refreshment will come from the presence of the Lord, and he will again send you Jesus, your appointed Messiah”– Acts 3:19-20 (Isaiah 44:22, Luke 15:11-32, 2 Corinthians 5:19-21)

”…The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep…” – John 21:15-19

Digging Deeper

Q1: Have you ever had someone close to you move away? How did you feel?  Did anything change about your relationship with that person?

Q2: How is Jesus’ “new command” in John 13:34 different from the command to love others in Leviticus 19:18?

Q3: It is easy for us, like Peter, to want to know the power of Christ’s resurrection without a desire to share in His sufferings (Phil. 3:10). Why do we have this tendency and what can we do about it?

Q4: Have you denied Jesus at some point in your life? What happened? Take a few minutes to read John 21:15-19. How has Jesus reinstated you?

Q5: Do you love others as Jesus loves you? Pray for those you have a tough relationship with, pray that God would help you love them as He does.
