In order to bear fruit two essential things need to happen:

1) Your vital ______________ with Christ.

  • The Source of Fruitfulness (vs. 15:1, 4-5, 11, 14-16)
  • The Nourishment of the Word (vs. 15:3, 7, 10)

We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.” – 1 John 2:3-6

2) Constant _________________ by the Father.

  • The Expectation of Fruitfulness (vs. 15:2, 6, 8)

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” – James 1:2-4

  • The Priority of Love (vs. 15:9, 12-13, 17)

Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.”– Romans 12:10

*True disciples of Jesus have a permanent, life-giving, fruit-producing union with Jesus

Digging Deeper

Q1: Share a story of a time you tried to grow something. What happened?

Q2: If Jesus is “the true vine,” what are false vines?

Q3: How do you “remain” in Jesus? What habits help you to do this?

Q4: Read Galatians 5:22-23. What forms do spiritual fruit take in the life of the believer? What fruit is evident in your life?

Q5: Read Psalm 80:7-19. How has God pruned you lately? Is there something in your life that He still needs to prune away? What is it?

Q6: Are you loving those around you? Pray for discernment from the Lord about how to love others the way Jesus loves you.
