“…they may take our lives, but they’ll never take our freedom!”
– Braveheart

“To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” – John 8:31-36

“Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.” – 1 Peter 2:16
Digging Deeper
Q1: What are some things that the world is still a “slave” to?
Q2: What image is Paul using in Colossians 2:13-14? Why do you think that people don’t understand that they are dead spiritually? How could we as followers of Jesus proclaim the victory we have in Christ?
Q3: Read Romans 8:1-4. Our lists of “Freed from,” and “Freed to,” are not exhaustive. What other “Freedom” promises can you recall from the Bible?
Q4: Read Galatians 5:1. Why is it easy for us to fall back into the traps of things we were once a slave too? (Be encouraged by Romans 6:14!)
Q5: Read Galatians 5:13 and Romans 7:14-20. What does these passages say about the responsibility we have in our Freedom in Christ?
Q6: Is there something in your life that you are still a “slave” too? If you are willing please share this with your group. Pray that the Holy Spirit would teach and guide you how to live free from this bondage.
