Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.”        (Matthew 16:24-25)

The Christian life is an ever-changing, flesh-crucifying ___________-stretching journey!

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. (Hebrew 11:1,6)

Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. (Matthew 4:18-20) (NASB)

-Acts 7

1. GOD’S CALL ALWAYS REQUIRES YOU TO ___________ _____________ FROM SOMETHING.

-Joshua 24:1-3a

Fences aren’t made for sitting…they’re made for ___________.

If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, even their own life- such a person cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:26)

2. GOD’S CALL ALWAYS REQUIRES YOU TO MOVE ________________   _________.

And He said to him, “Go from your country and your relatives, and come to the land which I will show you.”  (Acts 7:3) (NASB)

The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. (Deut. 31:8)

Digging Deeper

Q1: Where do you like going for a day-trip?  Why do you like going there?

Q2: Describe a journey you have been on?  What made it exciting?  What made it challenging or maybe even scary?

Q3: Study Philippians 2:1-8.  What did Jesus have to “let go” of on His journey?  What attitudes (v.5) might you have to pack or unpack from your emotional back-pack in order to move ahead on your journey?

Q4: Read Acts 9:1-6.  What did Paul have to let go of to follow Jesus?  What new things did he need to embrace on his journey?

Q5: Why do you think “letting go” so of something familiar/precious is so hard?

Q6: How is God’s two-part call (move away/move towards) on display in the verses below?

Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. (Matthew 4:18-20) (NASB)

Q7: Have you ever sensed God’s call upon your life?  If so, describe that call?         Did God’s call involve letting go or leaving something or someone?

Q8:  Read Romans 4.  What does this passage teach us about Abraham being the “father of faith”?  What is the connection between outward works and inward faith?
