Romans 12:1-2 message – March 23, 2014
1) Think Right about YOURSELF (vs. 3)
“Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and
turn away from evil.” – Proverbs 3:7 (Proverbs 26:12)
“If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling
yourself. You are not that important.” – Galatians 6:3 (Philippians 2:3-8)
“Who am I, To think Your glory needs my praises. But if this borrowed breath is
Yours Lord, Take it all.” – As You Find Me (Hillsong)
2) Think Right about OTHERS (vs. 4-5)
“And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather,
he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one
man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and
he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their
lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for
him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we
live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said,
‘We are his offspring.” – Acts 17:25-28
3) Think Right about your SPIRITUAL GIFTS (vs. 6-8)
Gifts are from God not man
God expects us to use our gifts
God has specific times and places for us to our gifts
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others,
as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks,
they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone
serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all
things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and
the power for ever and ever.” – 1 Peter 4:10-11
– It is our responsibility to discover our gifts
– It is our responsibility to learn our gifts
– It is our responsibility to practice our gifts
Digging Deeper
Q1: In what ways do you see a “Self-Esteem Obsession” in our world?
Q2: Verse 3 uses the word “think” twice. How can your mind contribute to a
healthy or unhealthy view of yourself?
Q3: Read Philippians 2:3-8. How are you being like Jesus towards others in
your relationships?
Q4: In what ways is a group of Christians like a single body? (vs. 4-5)
Q5: Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-31. How might each Christian contribute to
the well-being of other believers?
Q6: Read Colossians 3:23-24. Share a story of when you patiently learned
a skill or craft. How were you able to use that skill to further the Kingdom of
God?
Q7: What strikes you the most about Paul’s list of Spiritual Gifts in Romans
12? What do you find surprising, challenging, encouraging?
Q8: In what ways is God calling you to use your gifts today? Spend some
time in prayer asking God to give you opportunity to serve Him.
