-II Samuel 5:6a

Disturb us, Lord, when We are too well pleased with ourselves, When our dreams have come true Because we have dreamed too little, When we arrived safely Because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when with the abundance of things we possess We have lost our thirst For the waters of life; Having fallen in love with life, We have ceased to dream of eternity And in our efforts to build a new earth, We have allowed our vision Of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly, To venture on wider seas Where storms will show your mastery; Where losing sight of land, We shall find the stars. We ask You to push back The horizons of our hopes; And to push into the future In strength, courage, hope, and love. AMEN  (Sir Francis Drake)

Digging Deeper

Q1: Have you ever enjoyed a “season of success”? What did that look like? What successes did you enjoy?

Q2: Have you ever witnessed an individual or team experience a turn for the worse because they were arrogant/complacent in light of their success?  If so, explain.

Q3: Read II Samuel 4:5-12. How did David respond when Saul’s son, Ish-Bosheth was killed? What does this reveal about David’s heart and perspective, particularly towards those who opposed him?

Q4: David celebrated the important work of the people of Jabesh Gilead.  Who are some of the people that have contributed to your success?  How have you celebrated them?

Q5: Read Luke 16:10-11, Joshua 1:8-9 and Proverbs 16:3. What do these verses teach you about success?

Q6: It has been said that “Grace is everything for nothing to those who don’t deserve anything.”  Any success we have achieved or enjoyed is only because of God’s favour. Take a moment to “brag” about the Lord and His work in your life
